20-Something Good-The Damned Things

“All of my friends are going to hell” is easily the catchiest sing-along that has come out this year. The first record from The Damned Things in 10 years and we maintain the spooky and fun rock vibe The Damned Things has brought us.

19.) Demon Hunter-I Don’t Believe You

Off of the Peace segment of their double album from this year, this showcases some of the most emotional clean vocals of Ryan Clark while having amazing guitar soloing in the background to support it. Both the lyrics and instrumentals get the message and the emotion across.

18.) Climax and Exile-Varaha

The ultimate combination of Black and Doom metal. Varaha in this particular track is able to create a narrative and evolution trough the whole track where every element leads to another. Just when you think it is going to be very depressing in one turn, there is a melody that gives it more light within the shadows. Another track that showcases that darkness can be beautiful.

17.) Heaven Gets what it Wants (Feat. Howard Jones) -Jasta

Howard Jones and Jamey Jasta are a match made in heaven in many aspects of metal from Jones being a frequent guest on The Jasta Show, to hsi awesome collaboration in 2017 in Chasing Demons. Heaven gets what it Wants is a song that showcases the most aggressive tendencies of Jamey Jasta and the fullest range of Howard Jones.

16.)Eye Teeth-He is Legend

Easily one of, if not, THE BEST He is Legend album to date, this particular track is a testament to this whole album. Schuylar delivers full range in vocal styles with some catchy instrumentals to support it, further enhancing their signature post-hardcore sound.

15.) Jackie-Idle Hands

If you want to call this a love song, this is easily the best love song to come out this year. As we stated before, Idle Hands is a band that is ready to grab the 2020s by the throat and not let go. Jackie has some of the most emotional lyrics with amazing raw instrumentals to support it, essentially demonstrating the most beautiful aspects of darkness.

14.) Transcendence-Imperium Dekadenz

This song showcases a side of black metal that has not really been demonstrated before. While black metal is usually a genre that creates a dark cloud, this black metal track is a track that can clear the clouds in the sky. Having the rawness from black metal we all know and love, there is an underlying melody throughout it that really creates an atmosphere like no other.

13.) Death-Cellar Darling

The ultimate doom soundtrack to your demise that really makes you find beauty in death. Cellar Darling creates a vocal melody and soft and mysterious instrumental sound in Death that leads you from one realm to another. The melody essentially leads you to the other side.

12.) The Earth Mantra-Infected Rain

Our number 1 album of the year was Endorphin by Infected Rain and this song easily takes the cake in demonstrated what this group is capable of in its heaviest realms and its most melodic realms. No song is able to demonstrate the carnage and chaos in the world in such a beautiful matter, and it instantly sets the tone for what the rest of the album is going to sound like without giving too much away.

11.) Witan-Soilwork

As we have stated before, Soilwork is a band that is always able to evolve and bring new things to the table. Bjorn’s vocal style both when we growls, screams and sings is able to flow through the song so perfectly and the instrumentals are able to flow and follow everything perfectly.

10.) This Loss-KoRn

This is obviously a very personal album for Jonathan Davis, being that a good portion of The Nothing is about all the pain and grief he had to go through dealing with the losses of loved ones he experienced in 2018. This Loss is not just a song that is very literal in its meaning and goose bump inducing, this song also serves as the pair of shoos a listener can wear with their headphones to feel the pain. Pain was clearly the paintbrush behind this album and This Loss is a clear testament to that.

9.) When a Demon Defiles a Witch-Whitechappel

As we stated before, this album not only shows a different side of Whitechappel, but Phil himself, having The Valley be a very personal album to him. The clean vocals that are incorporated here are haunting and moody demonstrating a different language of this group in how it expresses darkness and rage.

8.) Times Cruel Curtain- Cattle Decapitation

Like we said with Whitechappel, Cattle Decapitation does a similar thing. The melodic guitars that are leading you in here before pulverizing you with some of the most intense riffs, beats and vocals essentially create a sonic nightmare like no other.

7.) Brighstar-Voyager

This Synthwave/progressive metal group easily delivered the most uplifting and most positive track this year. It is catchy and emotional essentially breaking the whole stereotype of rock and metal being all about negativity. It is beautiful and hard-hitting at the same time.

6.) The Guilty Party-While She Sleeps

While She Sleeps creates so much diversity and experimentation with So What, and The Guilty Party takes the experimentation to a whole other level. One minute you have the fastest and most intense riffs metalcore can offer, only to hit you with soothing harmonies and vocals. This is a song that is going to constantly leave you wondering what is happening next and with each passing listen, you will discover something new.

5.) Nero Forte-Slipknot

All you need to say is Slipknot and you instantly know what we are refering to. While this album is packed with catchy and relentless songs, Nero Forte takes the cake. The way the chorus is able to alternate from clean background vocals to some of the fastest growls Corey Taylor is able to say, this song will remain brunt in the frontal love of your brain.

4.) Horizon-Numenorean

The black metal album of the year also has the black metal song of the year as well. Horizon delivers some of the rawest sides of black metal while also having some soothing, progressive and melodic parts, making you find comfort in the dark realm that it leads you in. You will be chanting along with this song, ” I Finally Found Myself Again”

3.) Raise your Banner-Within Temptation

The harmonies that lead you in this atmospheric track you chill you to the core. The chorus will inflict you with power. The range of atmosphere, emotion, melody and power that is demonstrated on this one track alone is astronomical. Whether you are battling inner demons or facing an external challenge, this is the ultimate song to make you rise from the ashes in order to come back out on top.

2.) Love the ones you Hate- A Pale Horse Named Death

We finally get the third album by this group that creates the ultimate compositions for doom and gloom and this track alone made the entire 6 year wait worth it. Love the Ones you Hate has a nice flow to it that makes the fog of darkness almost comfortable to be in. This track is able to sedate you with its elements of darkness and also have an element of being open to interpretation as well. Is it expressing the current times we are living in, is it a personal experience that Sal is singing about, or can it be foreshadowing a sad an impending doom we are heading into. All of these elements truly make this track a work of art.

1.) I Am Broken Too-Killswitch Engage

This song is easily the most relatable song of 2019 as well as the best composed. Jesse is able to always sing from the heart and not hold back on issues that one can battle both externally and internally. This is truly a song that will help people in the future both lyrically and musically. This track can almost serve as a modern generations version of Jumper by Third Eye Blind. This showcases all the elements of Killswitch Engage that we all know and love while at the same time delivering something fresh musically and something that will speak to anyone who is feeling any bit of despair. The best song to let everyone know that you are never alone. 100% polished in its sound but 100% raw with emotion.

So many albums, so many songs, and yet we can only narrow it down to a certain amount. These songs really represented the year as well as served as a great representation on either ending this decade or the beginning of a new age. The 2020s is going to be an interested decade and these songs are able to demonstrate just that.
