The double dose of Spinefarm rock 7/2/2019

There have been just as many sub-genres of metal as there are metalheads in this scene. Many people have asked themselves and others, “what ever happened to just simply calling this hard and heavy music rock?” Well with all these sub-genres, there are plenty of bands that have reinforced the idea of down and dirty rock N roll. While many younger fans have grown up hearing their favorite rock bands on Sirius XM Octane, discovering modern hard rock bands such as Seether, Shinedown, Three Days Grace or Fozzy, many newer rock bands such as Greta Van Fleet, The Jacks and more have utilized the classic formula we have all known and love from the early days of Rock in the 60’s and 70s. The two artists on Spinefarm Records known as The Temperance Movement and Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown are other worthy bands that show that Rock is anything but dead, and they proved this at their performance July 2nd, 2019 at The Bowery Ballroom.

When The Temperance Movement took the stage, they delivered an all out assault of classic rock, demonstrating pure passion, talent and power. Many rock fans have gotten on board with this group after they delivered a sonic assault on the world touring with Deep Purple and Judas Priest in the summer of 2018. This is a group that cannot behind the smokescreen known as “Distortion”. While they delivered a clean sound of rock, it did not get more raw than this. The Temperance Movement played a set of down and dirty rock that remained in your face throughout the entirety while also delivering amazing ballads of tenderness to serenate everyone attending that show. Regardless of how hard or heavy they were playing, the raw talent they were able to demonstrate is nothing short of impressive. If vocalist Phil Campbell went slightly out of key, or Paul or Matt’s guitars went slightly out of tune, or bassist Nick Fyffe slightly botched a note, or drummer Simon Lea slightly skipped a beat, you would have heard it, regardless of you knowledge in music or performance. While they were able to demonstrate technical excellence on stage, there was not a single static moment on stage. Every member was moving around on stage and with that, got everyone in the audience moving as well. With their great performance in executing their material live, as well as having an engaging and interactive performance, The Temperance Movement is a band who’s performance you wont soon forget.

Last, but certainty not least, we get Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown. Again, this band demonstrates raw power and energy that goes to show that Rock N Roll is anything but fake. With Tyler Bryant able to deliver heart touching stories and commentary in between songs and executing the material of their latest record, Truth and Lies to a T, Tyler Bryant & the Shake Down, create an experience like no other, being able to express themselves on stage while interacting with the audience and engaging them in an experience while they were playing there songs and in between songs. Whether they were playing a slower song that served as a ballad, or a down and dirty rock song such as Ride off their newest record, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown were able to get the audience moving just as much as the rhythm and melody moves within their music. Whether they have a song that can make you smile or tear up, you are able to feel that any emotion that is portrayed on stage is what they portray in the studio when making new music. Tyler Bryant with the rest of his group were able to deliver a performance that was tight, honest and interactive. It goes to show why they can tour with a classic rock act such as ACDC and then tour with groups such as Clutch and Sevendust.
Bands such as The Temperance Movement and Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown are able to prove that Rock N Roll is anything but dead. They are able to deliver a formula that is familiar, yet fresh at the same time. Anyone who grew up with classic acts such as Led Zeppelin, White Snake, Guns N Roses or King’s X can appreciate this performance for both the nostalgia and technical excellence, while an younger audience can be equally as engaged by their performance, interaction and ways of having a modern charm with a relatively old-school sound.

The Temperance Movement and Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown are signed with Spinefarm records who always were able to show how perfect each of these subgenres can get. With newer school hardcore acts such as Employed to Serve, classic post hardcore acts such as He is Legend, metalcore masters such as Atreyu, While She Sleeps and Bullet for my Valentine, newer school experimental bands such as Shvpes and Puppy, while also being able to deliver sounds that we all know and love such as The Temperance Movement and Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, it goes to show that no matter what is innovated and how far down the road of experimentation we can go, there will always be bands that are able to deliver the roots of rock we all know and love with a new school face to appeal to everyone.
Summer 2019 is off to a great and promising start.
