Godmaker, that is all you have to say.

Godmaker is a band that has the ability to always shock you no matter how many times you have seen them or listen to their album. Every show is a different experience sonically and visually, and each passing listen on their albums, you will discover something new in the track that you never heard before and may never hear again. You never know when a song is going to end, what elements are going to be incorporated. With just three members, they are able to say so much in their live presence and still leave you asking questions and wondering what is coming next.

Godmaker definitely follows the classic Doom Metal elements we would see in bands such as Yob and Candlemass while having the raw riff-driven distorted aggression from bands such as High on Fire or Conan. With that description, there is an essence of chaos and structure that you won’t experience elsewhere. One minute, vocalist Pete Ross can have a beautiful vocal melody that can serenade only to let out a scream that will terrify you to the core. Their distorted and sludgy guitar tone combined with the intensity of bass playing Andrew Archey uses to support it will cut through any sound proofing whether it is in an isolated room at The Well, the fun stage we all know and love at St Vitus, or their recent show at Sunnyvale in Brooklyn. Nobody is sage from the riffing that will hit you square in the face, and once again, even if you have seen this band a million times, you will not know what to expect. With all the riffs and vocals that are incorporated in their sound, you have the intensity of Jon Lane’s drumming. Whether Godmaker is expressing a softer side of their sound, or going pedal to the metal, Jon Lane is hitting the drums so damn hard, you can almost feel it in your nerves. The double bass can shake the foundation of any structure, and the snare having such a distinct sound to go along with the aggression of the riffs, you have the perfect trio. With their raw sound and energy, they are able to turn any room they are in into an atmosphere, an emotion, a nightmare that you don’t want to wake up from and more.

Godmaker is not only a band that expresses the perfect formula of Doom by embracing a longer song length, demonstrating an essence of aggression and emotion, and technical skill that can impress any lover of music, but they are a band that has nothing to hide and shows nothing but rawness in their sound. We have seen plenty of moments when bands in a specific mode on stage or get into a certain character. This is not the case with Godmaker, whereas you have three guys who let out everything they have to say in their music whether it is the album you are listening to on your phone, or through the live experience. There could be times when the guys are rather static on stage, or just going all out with their stage presence in which you cant even get a clear picture of them. Regardless of what side of Godmaker you are seeing, you are seeing that, Godmaker. Not the next ‘Yob’, not the next Doom Master, not another band in the underground, you are seeing just that, Godmaker, and even when you say that you are going to see that, there is no way to describe it. Godmaker is just that, Godmaker, and even if you think you know this band, they will never cease to surprise you.
