Revolver X Baroness: Full Spectrum, The Art of Gold and Grey

There have been many artists in the world of rock and heavy metal that also use visual art as a medium to create an experience that one can share with their listener and viewers such as Jacob Bannon of Converge, Mike D of Killswitch Engage, Niklas Sundin of Dark Tranquility and John Baizley of Baroness. With these artists utilizing different mediums as forms of creative expression, they are able to create a sonic and visual experience behind their hands and minds. The creative process can go beyond the stage or the headphones and can further open the minds to new ideas and interpretations.

Friday June 14th in Brooklyn, Revolver Magazine hosted an exhibition showcasing what makes Baroness not only a great band to listen to, but also a band that is able to intrigue us beyond what we listen to. At 67 West St in Greenpoint, Revolver celebrated their latest issue covering Baroness, the release of Baroness’s new album Gold & Grey and were able to celebrate art and music with an event open to the public to share and celebrate art and music.

The event was titled, Full Spectrum, The Art of Gold and Grey, and you bet, you got the full spectrum at this exhibition. This exhibition also included works from Baizley’s long time collaborator, Marald van Haasteren. You were able to see how the work of John Baizley and Marald van Haasteren can visually connect and relate to each other, while also standing out in their own right. The exhibition was in a nice simple space where there wasn’t too much to take in at once. The back wall featured the pieces from the album artwork from the Baroness album covers that we all no and love, including the latest album, Gold & Grey. By the artist of this band being just as involved with the visual aspect of the music, you are able to feel and hear the sonic aspects of this work, practically making them interactive. When we stare into the artwork of Purple, you may here the powerful chorus from Shock Me, or the tender and somber intro from Chlorine and Whine. When you stare into the artwork from Yellow and Green, you are able to hear that anthem and power from a song such as March to the Sea. Behind you would lay two walls covered from top to bottom of Baizley and van Haasteren. By seeing the work outside of the music and the collaborative efforts of these two artists, we were able to obtain an experience like no other. While seeing a band like Baroness is amazing and an experience like no other, just being in the presence of the work that makes them such a definable act goes to show that it is more than just listening to their album, or seeing them live, but an experience that is collaborative, interactive and emotional.

At the entrance, you got some merch to take home with you such as vinyl for the new Baroness album, prints of the artists, and so much more, including Revolver’s latest issue. Revolver Magazine has not only been great at showing music to the world and hosting some amazing concerts, but also creating events that bring metal heads and friends together to celebrate art, music and positive vibes. Whenever we get a new issue, these events Revolver has been hosting is always something to look forward to along with the new issue.

Be sure to pick up Baroness’s new album Gold & Grey
